Stitched on my brain.

This song, and particularly that line, will just not get out of my head. Follows me everywhere.

I ♥ you, Sugarpie.

Alright. I’ve been trying my darnedest to not post this song, but I just can’t keep it to myself a second longer. This is my song of the week. Late last night it whooshed into my head like flood waters, and I’ve been happily humming in the deluge since.

Maybe happily isn’t the right word. But, in any case, I’m happy that this song exists.

Have I mentioned here the adoration I have for Sugar Pie Desanto? She’s incredible.

PREACH.

Alright. Social/cultural feminist rant impending. (I do my best to keep these off the blog, but this video is too good to not share.

I remember listening to Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls)” the day it came out, feeling a frustration that I couldn’t describe. Fortunately, this lady found the words for me:

Video found via Feministing.

I have love for Beyonce, and most of her previous fem-power anthems had some merit. However, preemptive victory rallies like “Run the World” do harm to the struggle for equality. Personally, in the face of a seemingly endless barrage of federal and local anti-woman legislation, (which, thank Science, is mostly not passing) I do not feel any more empowered just because Beyonce says I am.

(Also, don’t say this song/general pop culture literacy isn’t important. The music video was posted 8 days ago and already has over 24 million views. If that’s not enough proof for crucial effect of the messages in (even the fluffiest) pop culture, I recommend you read some bell hooks.)

Edit: Here is a really interesting post about the song, if you want to read more about it.

On tenterhooks, or “My life according to David Bowie.”

Occasionally, I have the power to resist a silly meme. Occasionally. I found this one at Knitorious.

Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Pass it on to 15 people you like and include me. (I’m not going to do that. But, you know, if you read this blog and you’d like to do this, please do! I’d like to read your clever answers.) Try it, you might like it! You can’t use the band I used, and try not to repeat a song title. It’s a lot harder than you think! Repost as “My life according to (band name).”

(I thought for a moment about being less predictable and choosing a non-Bowie artist, but … nope. Bowie it is.)

Day 13 – A picture of your favorite band or artist.

(All images found via this isn’t happiness.)

Stone love – she kneels before the grave
A brave son – who gave his life to save the slogans
That hover between the headstone and her eyes
For they penetrate her grieving

New love – a boy and girl are talking
New words – that only they can share in
New words – a love so strong it tears their hearts
To sleep – through the fleeting hours of morning

Love is careless in its choosing – sweeping over cross a baby
Love descends on those defenseless
Idiot love will spark the fusion
Inspirations have I none – just to touch the flaming dove
All I have is my love of love – and love is not loving

Soul love – the priest that tastes the word and
Told of love – and how my God on high is
All love – though reaching up my loneliness evolves
By the blindness that surrounds him

Love is careless in its choosing – sweeping over cross a baby
Love descends on those defenseless
Idiot love will spark the fusion
Inspirations have I none – just to touch the flaming dove
All I have is my love of love – and love is not loving

Just a prompt

David Bowie bei Rock am Ring 1987/ at the Rock...

What was your favorite song this year?

I’m not awesome at picking favorites, so instead here are my favorite songs from the last few albums I bought: Dog Days are Over by Florence + the Machine, The Box by Johnny Flynn, Four Dreams by Jesca Hoop (she was Tom Waits’ nanny. JUSSAYIN.), and Love and Hate by Blitzen Trapper.

Also my favorite song: Whatever makes this awful apartment warmer. Find me some music that can do that, and I’ll knit you something magnificent. (Like an afro or a staircase.)

Five years ago?

Yikes. Five years ago I was sixteen. Junior year of high school. I remember so, so very little of that phase. It was probably Golden Years by Bowie, which is an enduring favorite.

Ten years ago?

Ten years ago I was eleven, and it was 2000. I’m guessing it was something by the Spice Girls (shut up, they were awesome) or that song Where have all the Cowboys Gone?

Twenty?

Twenty years ago I was one year old. So I have no idea. But twenty years from now, here is how Grady will answer that question: Oh Danny Boy but the lyrics have to be “Oh Grady Belle”, Little Boxes on the Hillside, anything by Dustin O’Halloran, and Dog Days are Over. And Journey’s Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’. And Labelle’s Moonshadow, but the lyrics have to say “mama’s bein’ followed by a moonshadow.”

Curious Tuesday, Volume 2

David Bowie bei Rock am Ring 1987/ at the Rock...

I’m actually writing this on Sunday, but who wants two meme posts right in a row? I’ll schedule it for Tuesday. And this time, post your answers in the comments here, or the comments over at Gala’s blog, or on your own blog! I’d love to hear your answers.

Go here to discover the origin of Curious Tuesday.

1. Who is your favourite musician, NOT in terms of talent or aptitude, but based on pure sex appeal?

Do I even need to answer this? David Bowie. Everyone should know that the answer to this question will always be David Bowie.

2. What were some quirks of your past lovers that drove you crazy?

I’m going to use a single answer as a blanket: communication issues. I get the feeling that this will be one of my top 5 interpersonal annoyances for the rest of my life.

3. If there was a movie made about your life, what song would you absolutely INSIST be on the soundtrack?

Soul Love, by David Bowie. Of course. Press play!

4. What is your favourite quote right now?

Well, I’m listening to that song so at this precise moment it’s “All I have is my love of love, and love is not loving.” Aw. Also:

“Olympian gods, mark now my bedside lamp
Blown out; and be advised too late that he
Whom you call sire is stolen into the camp
Of warring Earth, and lies abed with me.
Call out your golden hordes, the harm is done:
Enraptured in his great embrace I lie;
Shake heaven with spears, but I shall bear a son
Branded with godhead, heel and brown and thigh.
Whom think not to bedazzle or confound
With meteoric splendours or display
Of blackened moons or suns in the big sound
Of sudden thunder on a silent day;
Pain and compassion shall he know, being mine,-
Confusion never, that is half divine.”
-Edna St. Vincent Millay (one of the four or five poets that don’t make me feel gross)

Also, there are a bunch in Another Country by James Baldwin, which I am currently reading, that I’d like to share, but alas I have lost the book. When (if) I find it I hope I’ll remember to pass on my favorite words and sentences.

5. Connect up with other nonpareils! Post links to your website, Facebook, Twitter, etc., here!

Um, I’m not going to do this because I am lazy and the baby wants to play. And I’d rather play with my baby than copy and paste a bunch of links.

P.S. Grady is whispering at me right now. And it is freaking adorable.
